Bahamas Overview

With over 700 islands stretched over 750 miles of tropical ocean, the Bahamas has much to offer the fisherman and non-fishing partners.  Whether fishing the sun-soaked flats in ankle-deep water or searching the mangrove fringes for bonefish, once hooked, you will experience the challenge of a fight that draws fishermen from around the world.  With the Gulf Stream to the west and the trade winds blowing in from the south-east, the sea surrounding the islands is normally around 80 degrees in the summer, falling to low 70s in mid-winter and this, combined with the relaxed island atmosphere and well-serviced lodges, makes the Bahamas an ideal choice for a fishing holiday.

Fishing

With over 50 fishing records to our credit, The Islands of the Bahamas are considered one of the premier destinations in the world for sportfishing. Deep-sea fishing and bonefishing are the two standouts, with events held nationwide throughout the year. Experienced guides and fishing lodges are plentiful in the islands and are fully kitted out to ensure you have the very best fishing experience possible. From chartered boats to flats fishing, The Bahamas has just about every type of fishing for first-timers and fanatics.

From the lodges you are transported by skiff to the sand or mangrove flats in search of bonefish.  These wary fish will nudge their way across the flats looking for food and it is not uncommon for an experienced flats angler to catch 10 - 15 fish in a day.  Besides bonefish, the flats are home to barracuda, permit and mutton snapper.  Fly fishing for permit is exciting sport. Veterans of the flats keep a spare rod with a brown or white bucktail ready tied in case they see one.  Further out, there is game fishing for blue and white marlin, blackfin and allison tuna and the broadbill swordfish.
