Sea Trout
|
| Sea trout in the 6 - 25lb range are encountered daily with an average of 12lbs from December to mid-April and much larger fish a possibility - if you can land them. These fish, like sea trout anywhere, are not afraid to fight. Much of the fishing is done in daylight and can be nothing short of electrifying. The sight of large sea trout striking a surface fished fly is not easily forgotten. |

Southern Patagonia
|
Sea Trout
|
The Rio Gallegos is nearly 300 kilometres in length and has its origin in the southern Andes with two pristine and very beautiful streams, the Penitente and the Ruebens. The river is generally shallow and the wading is extremely easy. It is wonderful fly water and while nearly all pools can be covered with a one-hand rod, the two-hander is often useful when conditions are windy or dictate the use of larger flies.
The wind can be very strong in this section of Patagonia. The southern tip of the South American continent is narrow but for the southern Cordillera there are no obstructions to break the wind as it sweeps in from the ocean. Believe it or not, this is a good thing! The prevailing wind is westerly and blows straight down the river! Huge casts are possible and the wind nearly always assists and hardly ever hinders the fishing. Normally the wind calms down a bit as the sun drops in the evening. However, the daytime wind also keeps the surface broken enabling anglers to take large, normally wary sea trout all throughout the bright, sunny days.
The Gallegos has a slight "brown" tint and heavy rain on local tributaries or in the headwaters can colour the main river quickly. However, the Patagonian summer angling season is normally quite dry. If it does rain, the river normally settles quickly and is even fishable in the interim with a great deal of colour. Larger tubes do the trick when the visibility reaches a minimum. The fish are aggressive and respond well to the fly. Smaller flies and nymphs work well in low-water conditions and the river is best approached in lower light during these circumstances. When the water level is normal, the river fishes well all day long and the biggest fish can even be taken in bright midday sun! |

ESTANCIA BUITRERAS
|
10 rods are accommodated on a working estancia with five double and two single rooms with private bathrooms. The lodge is extremely comfortable and has an excellent wine cellar although local wine and beer is included with meals.
The Buitreras section of the Rio Gallegos includes nearly 50 named pools, on 40km of private water. The fishing is exciting and varied with pools ranging from deep, stony runs to cut banks and stream like, shingle flats. Two anglers per guide are transported to their assigned section of river in a 4wd vehicle. Beats contain 6-9 pools (depending upon water level) and are rotated each half-day. The Home Pool is situated a short distance from the Lodge and can be fished by guests at anytime. This pool is a tremendous fish producer and many fish has been captured by anglers who chose to forego their siesta ! |

Steelhead
|
The Santa Cruz has strong runs of steelhead averaging 6-12 pounds. The fish are bright chrome and take full advantage of the river's current and any flaw in your tackle. A few day's fishing here is an ideal add on to a holiday on the Rio Grande or Rio Gallegos. There is one guide for two fishermen and guests are transported up and down the river in inflatable boats stopping for you to wade the pools. The current of the river is quite powerful but the river has an even bottom of small stones, it is well within the capabilities of anglers of normal wading abilities. |

Brown and Rainbow Trout
|
| Dry fly, nymph and streamer fishing for wild browns and rainbows in good numbers and of good average size, conducted in remote areas of outstanding natural beauty, staying in lodges offering every comfort and convenience describes the best of Patagonia's trout fishing. To the west lie the Andes and their more verdant foothills, and from and through these flow the trout waters - big, brawling, clearwater rivers, medium-sized streams, and placid spring creeks. This area is special, with fishing as good as most would ever want - plenty of wild browns and rainbows up to 10lbs. |

CHALLHUAQUEN LODGE
|
The fly fishing and scenery in Patagonia is very similar to the western states in the US, in particular Montana and Wyoming. The rivers in Patagonia are mainly freestone and there are a small number of spring creeks. The trout leap into action when feeding on the Mayfly and Caddis hatches. The lodge is situated in a breathtaking area and is among some of the finest trout fishing in the world.
Whilst most of the spectacular sight fishing is targeting the brown trout and rainbows, there is also a chance of hooking a landlocked salmon. The lodge has been open since 2004 and was designed to look after the most demanding fishing guests and therefore has exceptional guiding and excellent facilities, such as spars and fly tying areas.
While dining or having a drink at the bar you are able to overlook the river as it meanders through a magnificent landscape. Challhuaquen Lodge is has some of the best fishing in Argentina and this combined with the superb food, guiding and breathtaking scenery makes it a fantastic place to be. |
