| VARZINA RIVER |
  The Varzina rises
high in the upland tundra from Lake Enozero, which feeds cool, oxygen-rich water into the
River throughout the season. Atlantic salmon run 20 miles up the River, but the most
fished pools are on the first five miles from the sea. Clearly defined pools include
classic glides, runs, riffles and deep holes that hold some very large fish each season.
Many big fresh fish are hooked each season and a good fisherman can expect 10-25 fish in a
week.
This is the true spirit of Atlantic salmon fishing. While most of the fishing is
reached by a helicopter, some of the very best pools are within comfortable walking distance
of the Lodge. Many an evening outing after dinner has produced a trophy salmon within
sight of the Varzina lounge bar! |

 During June as the
trees come into bud fish will start to run the river. The first fish are always the
biggest they quickly move up the Varzina and the Penka tributary. While at dinner you
will see fish moving off every tide; evening fishing is all part of the Varzina day and some
of the best pools are within sight of your cabin. 24-hour daylight means summer comes
quickly. In July the water level comes down and floating lines are the norm.
Prime time is from late June; all four rivers will have good runs of fish. The salmon
that you land have spent two or three years at sea feeding, and will be in the 15 to 30 lb
range. Fish over 40lb may be on their second return to the river or have just stayed
out at sea for up to 5 years. These are very rare fish and we still don’t know a
great deal about them! These sea fish will stun any fisherman with their power.

| The Varzina has a Russian fly fishing guide team (they all speak English).
Guides will help and advise on which lines and fly to use in each pool. We encourage
clients to try new methods, many find fishing skated or hitched flies such as Sunray Shadow
the most exciting way of catching salmon; the wake caused by the fly on the water triggers a
dramatic take on the surface by a salmon. Safety when fishing in a wilderness environment is
a prime consideration and all the guides carry medical kits and radios, there is also a
doctor in the camp. |
| PENKA |
 Penka, the major tributary of the Varzina, flows into the home pool in sight
of the lodge. Being a smaller river it warms up earlier and many of the first spring
salmon, often weighing over 20lbs, are caught here. |
| DROSDOVKA |
| Drosdovka is a 10-minute helicopter ride from the lodge. It is in a lush
green open valley and is the most gentle of the rivers in the area. Rapid runs and
pools alternate to produce a nicely balanced salmon fishery. |

Varzina River Lodge has a commanding view over the ruggedly beautiful
north-eastern coast of the Kola Peninsula. The lodge accommodates 16 guests in eight
twin cabins spread out spread out around the main lodge, which houses the restaurant and
bar. A separate house with two twin rooms, with its own shower can be booked for
couples or family groups. There are two separate modern shower and sauna blocks. |

return flights from the UK to Helsinki, one night in Helsinki, flight to Murmansk and visa
handling (based on normal visa service). As a guide the price for this service in
2007 was £1160, we do not anticipate a large increase.
