| JARDINES DE LA REINA |
| Bonefish, Permit & Tarpon |
| You'll find some of the finest bonefishing in the world at Jardines de la Reina since the flats are never commercially fished.
They are teeming with bones averaging four to six pounds but there are many fish in the seven to nine pound range.
10-14lb fish are regularly caught. Guides use the skiffs to cover a lot of water, but when they encounter an especially good flat to wade, they will
stop. Late afternoon and evening fishing can be especially pleasant as the wind typically dies down, tailing and feeding bones can be spotted hundreds of yards away on the calm flats, and in the low evening light the bones pounce on a fly with abandon you don't see in mid-day. |
   |
|
Tarpon are abundant in the island system, especially baby tarpon in the 20-50 pound class. Larger fish, 80-140 lbs are getting more common every year especially between March and June.
This is a great place to catch a big permit on a fly, there are both good numbers of big permit, and superb permit flats to be found.
It is not uncommon to pole up to the flats and see a half a dozen permit tailing, in the 25-35 pound class!
This is one of the few places in the world where there is a good chance of a grand slam.
Other species include Jack Crevalle, Horse Eye Jacks, Silky and Caribbean Reef sharks.
Jacks are abundant here and there are many in the fifteen to twenty pound range cruising the flats.
Fishermen who wish to try trolling off the reef with plugs, bait, and even flies encounter many other species.
Various snappers including the huge Cubera Snapper are present as well as groupers, jacks, kingfish, albacore, wahoo, and bonito and big cudas.
One group of visiting anglers caught twenty five different species off the reef-in one day! |
