Baja California, Mexico
May 2026 - Trip Report - Fergus Kelley
The Baja trip brought together a great group of four Brits and two Americans, which made for plenty of lively conversations and good laughs throughout the week.
Staying at Aqua Ventana right on the beach gave us incredible sunrises and sunsets every day, paired perfectly with great food and cocktails in the evenings.
Due to some unusual and unseasonably warm conditions, the fishing program ended up a little different than expected. Because the winter temperatures never properly cooled, the water stayed much warmer than normal, resulting in a lack of sardines in the area and making the fishing more challenging each day.
Nonetheless, the group persevered, and I’m pleased to report everyone got into roosterfish, along with a variety of other species throughout the trip.
Each morning our guides picked us up directly from the beach before heading out to fish different areas around the bay, usually wrapping up around 12–1pm each day.
There were some standout catches during the week. Richard had an exceptional day landing four big roosterfish along with a large jack, making for fantastic sport. Ian also caught some excellent fish, including a roosterfish topping 35lb, while Stephen landed several quality fish as well.
Despite the difficult bait situation and increasingly windy, unseasonable weather toward the end of the week — which made conditions particularly tough — the group still achieved an excellent haul of fish overall.
Tally for the Week
- Roosterfish — 22
- Roosterfish over 20lb — 15
- Roosterfish over 35lb — 2
- Jack Crevalle — 2
- Spanish Mackerel — 3
- Dorado — 1
- Skipjack Tuna — 20+
- Other species included:
- Pompano
- Snapper
- Green Runner
- Triggerfish
- Ladyfish
- Trumpetfish
- Needlefish
Overall, despite the challenging conditions, the trip delivered great fishing, great company, and an unforgettable week in Baja.
“The trip was great and I’m sure you’ve had a full report. The only real downsides were the sardines and wind on the last day. Fergus and Santi were very helpful with the fishing and the location was very good. I’d like to return.” — Mark
“As you can see from the WhatsApp group the trip was enjoyed by all with everyone catching roosters. The hotel was comfortable and well-presented and no issues with the food. Bar prices for alcohol were reasonable. Both Fergus and Santiago were supportive and helpful and provided translation with the skippers who spoke little English. I would happily recommend this trip to others interested in catching roosterfish.” — Richard
“I enjoyed the trip. Hotel and fishing were excellent, and I hooked into lots of fish including six roosterfish. Overall, the trip, group and guides were excellent.” — Ian
