BRYNJUDALSÁ

Brynjudalsá is a charming, intimate little river located approximately 40 minutes from Reykjavík. While it is small in size, it offers an enjoyable and surprisingly exciting fishing experience, with good stocks of both Atlantic salmon and sea trout.

The river is particularly well suited to anglers looking to experience a quieter and more intimate side of Icelandic fishing. With its close-quarter fishing, peaceful surroundings and comfortable self-catering lodge, Brynjudalsá is a pleasant place to spend a couple of nights and an excellent addition to a wider Icelandic itinerary.

The Fishing

Brynjudalsá is a small-volume river, best suited to single-handed rods and a close, mobile approach. Salmon are often encountered at close range and, in some pools, can be seen holding in the clear water before a cast is made.

Two major waterfalls in the lower river play an important role, with fresh runs of salmon gathering below them in considerable numbers. As the season progresses, these fish can spread throughout the river system, providing enjoyable and varied fishing.

Despite its modest size, Brynjudalsá is capable of producing some excellent salmon, with fish averaging around 7lb and larger specimens possible. The river also holds sea trout, adding further variety to the fishing.

The appeal here is not the scale of the river or the number of beats. Instead, Brynjudalsá offers a wonderfully personal fishing experience, where anglers can fish at close quarters, explore the water at their own pace and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Brynjudalsá Lodge

The spacious Brynjudalsá Lodge provides a comfortable base for a short stay. With just two en-suite twin bedrooms, it is particularly well suited to a small party travelling together.

The lodge enjoys beautiful views across the surrounding landscape, with one bedroom overlooking the mountains and the other looking down the river valley. It is a peaceful and comfortable place to return to after a day on the water.

Accommodation is self-catering, allowing guests the freedom to organise their stay as they wish. We recommend stocking up on supplies in Reykjavík before travelling to the lodge.

Its proximity to Reykjavík makes it easy to incorporate into a longer itinerary, whether combined with sightseeing, time in the capital or fishing elsewhere in Iceland. It can also work particularly well alongside Skuggi, creating an enjoyable combination of intimate river fishing and the larger-scale salmon and sea trout opportunities of the Grímsá junction.
