MIÐFJARÐARA

The Miðfjarðará is widely regarded as one of Iceland's finest and most productive Atlantic salmon fisheries in the world. Situated in the north-west of the country, it offers an exceptional variety of water and a remarkably extensive fishing area, combining the main Miðfjarðará with the Austurá, Vesturá and smaller Núpsá tributary. Together, these rivers provide over 100 kilometres of fishable water, with around 200 named pools, as well as countless runs, glides and smaller holding lies.

One of the great attractions of the Miðfjarðará is the sheer diversity of the fishing. From intimate, crystal-clear pools and shallow glides to spectacular canyon water, waterfalls and deeper holding pools, every day can feel different. The river is divided into a number of beats, which are rotated between the rods, allowing anglers to experience a wide range of water during their stay.

The Miðfjarðará is particularly well known for its aggressive wild Atlantic salmon. Both grilse and larger multi-sea-winter fish can be willing takers, and the clear water provides some wonderfully visual fishing. Floating lines, small flies and surface techniques can all be highly effective, making this an especially exciting destination for anglers who enjoy seeing a fish react to the fly. A single handed rod is all that is needed. 

Fishing is shared between a limited number of rods, depending on the time of year, ensuring that the water is not over-pressured and that pools have an opportunity to rest between anglers. The season runs from mid-June until September, with the early weeks offering the chance of larger multi-sea-winter salmon, the height of the summer bringing the main runs of fresh fish, and late August and early September often producing excellent sport when rain and cooler conditions freshen the river. 

Accommodation is at the historic Laxahvammur Lodge, where guests can relax and enjoy traditional Icelandic hospitality after a day on the river. The lodge offers comfortable en-suite accommodation and excellent meals, with anglers dining together in a relaxed and sociable setting.
