SKUGGI

Skuggi, meaning “Shadow” in Icelandic, is the fascinating junction and lower estuary beat of the Grímsá. It offers a very different experience to many of Iceland's better-known salmon rivers and represents an excellent-value option for anglers looking for productive fishing in a peaceful and independent setting.

Situated at an important meeting point within the river system, Skuggi is perfectly positioned to intercept migratory fish. All salmon and sea trout entering the Grímsá pass through Skuggi, while fish moving towards the neighbouring Norðura, Thverá and Kjarrá systems also pass through the area.

On calm days, it is sometimes possible to see pods of fresh fish moving upriver after entering on a recent high tide. These newly arrived salmon and sea trout are among the ultimate prizes for the fly angler — silver-bright, powerful and fresh from the sea.

The Fishing

Skuggi offers exciting fishing for both Atlantic salmon and sea trout throughout the summer.

July is the prime month for salmon, when good numbers of fresh fish are moving through the system. The junction creates a fascinating mix of currents, seams and holding water, and anglers who enjoy watching the river, understanding fish movement and adapting to changing conditions will particularly enjoy the fishing here.

Sea trout begin to feature from late June, with excellent fishing continuing through July and into August. The opportunity to encounter both species during the course of a trip adds another dimension to the experience and makes Skuggi an attractive choice across much of the Icelandic season.

While Skuggi may not offer the highly structured, fully serviced experience of Iceland's premium salmon lodges, it can produce excellent fishing at a considerably more accessible price.
