Rajamaa Lodge – Swedish Lapland

The Fishing

The principal attraction at Rajamaa is the excellent grayling fishing on the River Muonio and its surrounding waters.

The Muonio is an enormous, free-flowing river forming part of the border between Sweden and Finland. Its broad pools, long glides, rocky runs and faster stretches provide wonderful opportunities for fly fishing, with grayling present throughout the river system.

Dry-fly fishing is a particular highlight, especially during the summer when insect hatches bring fish to the surface. The fishing can be wonderfully enjoyable, with the opportunity to explore different stretches of river in beautiful, peaceful surroundings.

Experienced local guides know the river intimately and can help anglers find productive water according to the conditions. Fishing is generally undertaken by wading, with boats used where appropriate to reach different areas.

The river also supports runs of wild Baltic salmon and sea trout, which can provide an exciting additional opportunity during a fishing holiday. However, it is the quality and variety of the grayling fishing that make Rajamaa particularly special.

Fishing Under the Midnight Sun

One of the great pleasures of visiting Rajamaa in June and July is the extraordinary length of the summer days.

Situated so far north, the lodge experiences the midnight sun, with continuous daylight allowing anglers to fish at almost any hour.

There is something particularly memorable about fishing a quiet stretch of river late in the evening, with the sun still above the horizon and trout or grayling rising in the gentle light.

The freedom to fish when conditions are at their best, without being restricted by darkness, is one of the great attractions of a summer fishing holiday in Lapland.

Rajamaa Lodge

Rajamaa is a traditional, family-run fishing lodge offering simple, comfortable accommodation in a wonderfully peaceful setting.

Guests stay in self-contained timber chalets, generally accommodating two or four people, with private bathroom facilities and basic amenities.

The main lodge houses the dining room, reception and communal areas, where guests can enjoy good, hearty meals and the friendly hospitality for which Rajamaa is known. A traditional sauna provides a welcome place to relax after a day on the river.

The atmosphere is informal and welcoming, with the emphasis very much on the fishing, the surrounding countryside and enjoying the experience of being in Lapland.
