The Fishing

The Kaitum is widely regarded as one of Sweden's finest grayling rivers, renowned for its healthy population of wild fish and exceptional dry-fly fishing.

The river is broad and powerful in places, with a wonderful variety of pools, glides, riffles and faster runs. Its clear water and abundant insect life provide excellent conditions for grayling, which can often be found rising freely to dry flies throughout the summer.

The quality of the fishing is the principal attraction. Good-sized grayling are present throughout the river, and the opportunity to spend long summer days exploring its varied water is a delight for any keen fly fisherman.

Dry-fly fishing is particularly rewarding, with carefully presented imitations of the natural insects often producing exciting surface takes. Nymphing can also be productive when fish are not rising.

The fishing programme is organised to make the most of the available water while carefully managing pressure on individual stretches. Angler numbers are limited, and experienced local guides use boats to reach different sections of the river, allowing guests to explore a considerable variety of fishing during their stay.

For those interested in something different, guided pike fishing can also be arranged on selected waters, subject to availability and an additional charge.

A Remote Wilderness Experience

Part of the appeal of Tjuonajokk is the journey itself.

Guests travel to Kiruna in northern Sweden before continuing by helicopter into the wilderness. The flight provides a wonderful introduction to the extraordinary landscapes of Lapland, passing over vast forests, lakes and remote river valleys before reaching the fishing camp.

Once at Tjuonajokk, the sense of isolation is remarkable. There are no roads leading to the camp, and the surrounding countryside remains wonderfully peaceful.

During June and July, the midnight sun provides almost continuous daylight, allowing anglers to enjoy long days on the river and the extraordinary experience of fishing beneath the Arctic summer sun.
