Mexico - Ascension Bay
Hosted by: Tony Fox
Migratory tarpon are becoming an increasingly exciting part of the fishing at Ascension Bay Lodge. For many years they were a well-kept secret, with only the occasional visitor noticing their presence. In recent seasons, however, the guides have started to see more and more of these big fish moving through the bay in July, and they are steadily working out the best ways to target them. The fish travel up from Central and South America and often show up in the deeper channels and outer lagoons, rolling and feeding in the warm, calm water.
What makes this fishery so special is that many of these tarpon have rarely, if ever, seen a fly. They are strong, clean fish that provide an extraordinary test of tackle and skill. Early mornings and still conditions are often the most productive times, when anglers can spot them cruising or laid up close to the surface. The guides are learning how best to approach these powerful fish, and their growing experience is paying off with more consistent encounters.
It is now quite realistic to expect shots at fish well over 100 pounds, often in water clear enough to watch every movement of the tarpon as it turns to take the fly. The takes can be explosive, followed by long, acrobatic fights that will challenge even the most experienced anglers. For anyone looking for serious, world-class tarpon fishing in a spectacular setting, Ascension Bay in July offers an unforgettable opportunity.
