The sheer scale and variety of fishable water is extraordinary; miles of hard sand flats, mangrove lagoons, coral edges, and channels combine to create a fishery that feels both expansive and wonderfully unpressured. Traditionally celebrated as one of the world’s finest bonefishing destinations, Los Roques offers exceptional numbers of fish, with bonefish averaging 3–5lbs and larger specimens encountered regularly. Increasingly, however, anglers are drawn by the remarkable diversity of the fishery. Juvenile tarpon patrol the lagoons and mangroves, permit tail across the flats, while triggerfish, snook, barracuda, jacks, parrotfish, and larger migratory tarpon all provide exciting opportunities throughout the week. One of the great attractions of Los Roques is that it is fundamentally a wading fishery. Around 90% of the fishing is done on foot, allowing anglers to explore the flats and stalk fish at close range in crystal-clear water. Situated just 12 degrees north of the equator, the archipelago benefits from remarkably stable tides and weather patterns, with minimal seasonal fluctuation in water or air temperatures.
