CAYO CRUZ & ROMANO

Situated off the northern coast of Cuba's Camagüey province, the Cayo Cruz and Cayo Romano fishery encompasses an extensive network of shallow flats, sheltered lagoons, mangrove creeks and remote cays. This beautiful and relatively lightly fished region offers some of Cuba's most exciting saltwater fly fishing, particularly for bonefish and permit.

The fishing area covers hundreds of square kilometres, providing an enormous variety of water to explore. With limited fishing pressure and experienced local guides, anglers can enjoy a wonderful sense of space and solitude, often spending an entire day without encountering another fishing skiff.

The Fishing

One of the great attractions of Cayo Romano is the quality of the wade fishing. Extensive areas of firm white sand and mottled flats allow anglers to stalk fish on foot, sometimes for several hours without returning to the boat. The clear, shallow water provides excellent opportunities to sight-fish for cruising and tailing bonefish.

Bonefish are plentiful, with good numbers of fish averaging around 4 lb and the possibility of encountering considerably larger specimens. They can be found in singles, pairs and schools, often feeding across expansive flats where careful wading and accurate casting are rewarded.

Cayo Romano is also particularly well regarded for its permit fishing. These challenging fish can be encountered across a variety of habitats, from shallow sand flats to turtle grass beds and the edges of deeper channels. The opportunity to target both bonefish and permit during the same day's fishing is one of the principal reasons for visiting this destination.

Tarpon are found in certain lagoons and channels, providing the possibility of completing a Grand Slam. Snook, barracuda, jacks and snapper offer additional sport, making this a wonderfully varied fishery.

The guides have an excellent knowledge of the extensive fishing grounds and plan each day's fishing around the tides, weather and movements of the fish. Anglers can enjoy a combination of wading and fishing from shallow-draft skiffs, with the flexibility to concentrate on particular species according to their interests.
