GARDENS OF THE KING

The Gardens of the King, or Jardines del Rey, is a beautiful archipelago off Cuba's northern coast, with extensive mangrove islands, sheltered lagoons and shallow flats providing excellent saltwater fly fishing.

The fishing takes place in a largely unspoilt marine environment, with winding channels, mangrove creeks and open flats supporting a variety of species. The region's protected waters and relatively limited fishing pressure make it a particularly attractive destination for visiting anglers.

The Fishing

The principal attraction is the tarpon fishing. Smaller resident tarpon can be encountered throughout the year, particularly around the mangroves, lagoons and deeper channels, providing exciting sport on the fly.

From approximately March to August, larger migratory tarpon move through the region, offering the opportunity to target some genuinely impressive fish. Tarpon exceeding 100 lb are a possibility during the season, although their movements and availability naturally depend on the conditions.

Bonefish are also found on the surrounding flats, while barracuda, jacks and snapper provide additional sport. The variety of habitats allows anglers to explore different fishing situations throughout the week, with experienced local guides selecting the most suitable areas according to the tides, weather and movements of the fish.
