Baja California offers one of the most exciting and distinctive saltwater fly fishing experiences in the world. Set against a spectacular backdrop of desert mountains, sandy beaches and the deep blue waters of the Sea of Cortez, this remarkable fishery is particularly renowned for its roosterfish.

Our fishing is based around the relaxed coastal village of La Ventana, near La Paz in Baja California Sur. The surrounding waters, including the coastline around Isla Cerralvo, provide excellent opportunities for sight-fishing for roosterfish, together with a remarkable variety of other powerful saltwater species.

The Fishing

Roosterfish are the principal attraction. Instantly recognisable by their distinctive dorsal fins, these powerful predators patrol the beaches, rocky headlands and shallow coastal waters in search of baitfish.

The fishing is highly visual and wonderfully exciting. Anglers often have the opportunity to spot fish cruising or hunting close to the surface before making a carefully placed cast. Watching a large roosterfish accelerate towards a fly is an extraordinary experience, although persuading one to take can be challenging.

Roosterfish are notoriously unpredictable, and success requires accurate casting, quick reactions and a little patience. When hooked, they are exceptionally strong fighters, capable of long, powerful runs.

The principal season for targeting larger roosterfish is generally from late spring through the summer, when warmer water and concentrations of baitfish bring fish into the coastal shallows. The exact timing varies from year to year according to water temperatures and conditions.

Fishing is undertaken from traditional Mexican pangas, specially equipped for fly fishing, with experienced local captains who have an intimate knowledge of the coastline and movements of the fish.

A variety of techniques can be employed, including sight-fishing to cruising fish and presenting flies to roosterfish pursuing baitfish. There are also opportunities to fish from the beach when conditions allow.

Other Species

Although roosterfish are the main attraction, the Sea of Cortez supports an extraordinary diversity of marine life and offers opportunities to target numerous other species.

Jack crevalle are particularly exciting on the fly, often travelling in schools and feeding aggressively around baitfish. Dorado provide spectacular sport when present, while yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, Spanish mackerel, snapper, grouper and several species of pompano add further variety.

The abundance of different species means that anglers can enjoy a wide range of fishing situations throughout the week, with guides adapting their approach according to the conditions and available opportunities.

The combination of challenging roosterfish fishing and the possibility of encountering other powerful game fish makes Baja an exceptionally rewarding destination for experienced saltwater fly fishermen.
